FTPPPP
If you are unable connect, but not getting an "authorization
denied" message, make sure you have passive (PASV) mode
enabled on your FTP client. This option varies from client
to client, but is generally found in the firewall/options
settings for your respective FTP software.
Extra FTP accounts are unable to connect
The file which retains information on the extra ftp accounts
for your domain can become corrupted. If you update or
delete then re-add an extra ftp account and still cannot
connect using it, contact our support department to have the
ftp.db file removed.
What is Anonymous FTP??
Anonymous FTP is a feature which uses the File Transfer
Protocol, allowing visitors to download certain files
without a unique login and password. This is very useful for
clients who have large files they wish to distribute to
visitors. FTP is preferred over downloading via HTTP because
FTP is much faster. Below is the login dialogue that will
appear when an Anonymous FTP connection is established:
Connected to account id.
220 account id FTP Server ready.
Name (account id:user): anonymous
331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as
password..
Password:
230 Logged in anonymously.
When the anonymous user connects to your account, the are
logged into your "ftp" directory in your account root. The
user is also jailed to this directory, meaning that they
cannot move outside of this directory. Anonymous users
cannot make or rename any directories, nor can they upload
any data. Anonymous users can only move into different
directories within the "ftp" directory and they can only
download files and directories.
Anonymous users can access your Anonymous FTP site with
either "ftp" or "anonymous" as the login and any password
(other than null) is acceptable. To link to your Anonymous
FTP website, just use ftp://account id as the syntax.
You will need to place all files you want accessible to
Anonymous FTP users in your "ftp" directory. Remember that
all files and directories in your ftp directory will be
accessible by anyone, so do not put sensitive data in this
directory! In order to upload this data, you will need to
log into your account normally through FTP (not through
Anonymous FTP because you cannot upload), then change
directory into your ftp directory. From here, upload any
files/directories you want available on your Anonymous FTP
site.
You can have no more than six or fifteen anonymous FTP
users logged into your account at one time, depending upon
your virtual server plan. Each Anonymous FTP user can only
occupy no more than three anonymous connections at once as
well. This is to prevent anyone from establishing an
unreasonable number of FTP connections.
The file entitled "banner.msg" in your "ftp" directory is
displayed when an Anonymous FTP user logs into your account.
This file can be modified by you at anytime. You should use
your Personal Control Panel to modify this banner message.
Finally, you have the ability to enable or disable
Anonymous FTP service on your account at anytime. This can
be done through your Personal Control Panel, and changes you
make are done in real-time. Disabling Anonymous FTP service
will not destroy any data in your "ftp" directory but will
just make it unavailable to anonymous users. When you enable
your Anonymous FTP account, all of your information will be
available once again, and your banner message will be
displayed.
How many simultaneous connections can I
have at once?
Any single user, as determined by having the same IP
address, cannot have more than three simultaneous
connections at once. This includes simultaneous connections
under different userids from extra FTP accounts created, and
even under different accounts on the same web server. The
reasoning behind this is to prevent any one person from
taking an unreasonable number of FTP connections away from
the server.
You will also need to know your login (also referred to
as your "userid"), your account password, and the IP address
assigned to your account
The file which retains information on the extra ftp
accounts for your domain can become corrupted. If you update
or delete then re-add an extra ftp account and still cannot
connect using it, contact our support department to have the
ftp.db file removed.
How quickly do I have to successfully
authenticate before being logged ?
From the time you establish a connection to the FTP server,
you have 30 seconds to enter your login and password
correctly. If during this time no login and password is
entered or there is an incorrect login/password combination
entered, you must re-connect and try again.
Why is my xferlog owned by root?
Your xferlog in your logs directory is owned by root so you
cannot alter the contents of this file. This file is used in
computing your bandwidth consumption, which includes FTP
traffic. While you can view the xferlog, you cannot edit,
rename, or delete the file.
Where do I upload all of the files
pertaining to my website?
You need to upload files pertaining to your website to your
"public_html" directory inside the root of your account.
Files uploaded below your public_html directory, such as in
the root of your account or in your ftp directory will not
be available on your website.
Overview of Extra FTP Accounts
Extra FTP Accounts is a feature offered to all virtual
server clients. Depending upon your account plan, you can
create up to 25 or 50 FTP accounts. This includes your
master FTP account that was assigned with your new account,
plus additional accounts which you can configure. Each one
of the additional FTP accounts can be setup in real-time,
allowing you to "restrict" access to a particular directory
on your account.
Extra FTP accounts should only be used for its intended
purpose. That is, allowing a group of developers work on the
website with access to their areas of the website only. It
is important to know that the client is responsible for the
content uploaded to their account, even content uploaded by
those with FTP access to their account. In other words, do
not give FTP access to your account unless you know the
person and trust their judgment.
How many extra FTP accounts can I create?
Both the NT and the Unix standard plans allow a maximum of
25 FTP accounts. The developer plans for both allow a
maximum of 50 FTP accounts. Remember that the "master" FTP
account, which is the FTP account Nader Solution assigned to
you when your virtual server was setup, counts as one of the
FTP accounts.
How do I create extra FTP accounts on my
account?
Through your Personal Control Panel, create additional FTP
accounts by going to Virtual Server Configurations, then to
Extra FTP Accounts. Now select the "Add" link on the
menubar. From here you will need to enter a login, password,
and restricted area for this FTP account.
How do I restrict the access of my extra
FTP accounts?
The field entitled "Restricted Area" does this. It is
important that you understand what purpose the restricted
area serves. You can restrict any of your extra FTP accounts
ability to move around within your account. By restricting
their access to a particular directory, they can only
upload, download, remove, and edit files and directories
within their own restricted area. The restricted area is
expressed as a pathname, with "/" being your public_html
directory. So if you wanted to restrict a particular FTP
account with the login dan to the directory rock in your
public_html directory, simply make their restricted area
"/rock" and this would be done. In this example, when dan
FTPs into the account, he is restricted to the directory
rock and cannot move below this directory (such as moving
down into the public_html). Important Note: Making an extra
FTP account with "/" as their restricted area gives them
access to your entire website. They could remove the entire
site at anytime, so use good judgment when determining your
FTP account restricted areas. What security
concerns should I have about Extra FTP Accounts?
Handing out your extra FTP accounts to anyone who wants
access to your virtual FTP server is a poor decision and
would most likely lead to problems. Care should be exercised
when giving our FTP access. You should make sure the user
has good intentions and really needs access. Security is not
an issue until you start making FTP accounts with your root
directory as the restricted area, so these FTP users can
delete your entire website at anytime. This is not really an
issue of security anymore than it is good decision making.
We strongly urge you to keep the extra FTP accounts to a
minimum, only give access to those who need it for
legitimate reasons and good intentions, and make sure their
restricted area does not contain any data you would want
altered.
Also be aware that the holder of the webhosting account
is responsible for all material loaded onto Nader Solutions
servers. Be sure anyone using an extra ftp account is aware
of and in accordance with the Acceptable Uses Policy.
How long does it take for a new FTP
account to be accessible?
Once you fill out the login, password, and restricted area
for the FTP account and press the "Submit" or "Add User"
button, the FTP account is created automatically. You can
now begin using this FTP account.
How can I display a message in my
Anonymous FTP?
From your PCP, go to Virtual Server Configurations then to
Anonymous FTP. Click the Configure option at the top of the
right-hand window. Type the greeting you want your visitors
to see in the text box and click the Save Changes button.
Note: When accessing Anonymous FTP via a web browser, this
banner message may not automatically display. This is a
browser issue, and not a service issue.
Can Anonymous FTP users upload files to
my account?
No, this is not allowed. You, the client, do not want to be
responsible for content uploaded by an Anonymous FTP user
which may be in violation of our Acceptable Uses Policy.
Anonymous FTP users are not allowed to upload content, and
no exceptions are made to this policy. If you need for a
particular person to be able to upload information
pertaining to your website, you should consider giving them
one of your extra FTP accounts.
Can Anonymous FTP users move outside of
the ftp directory?
No. Anonymous FTP users are restricted to your "ftp"
directory located in the root of your account. These users
cannot move below this directory. However, they can move
into directories inside of your ftp directory.
How many Anonymous FTP users can be
logged into my account at once?
At most, there can only be six or twelve FTP users logged
into your account at any particular time, depending upon
which virtual server plan you are hosted on. These users
also include any normal FTP users that might be logged into
your account as well as anonymous FTP users. Therefore, you
can have only six or twelve total Anonymous FTP and normal
FTP users logged into your account at once. Unix Standard
accounts allow a maximum of 6 FTP connections and Unix
Developer accounts allow a maximum of 12 FTP connections.
Does the Acceptable Use Policy apply to
materials on my Anonymous FTP?
The Acceptable Uses Policy applies to not only content on
your website, but any contents available to Anonymous FTP
users. Please respect all international copyrights and do
not distribute work that is not your own or work of which
you do not have permission to freely distribute.
What do I need in order to connect to my
site via FTP?
In order to connect to your website via FTP, you will need
some sort of FTP client software. FTP client software comes
with many different features and prices, but Nader Solutions
recommends the use of WS_FTP.You will also need to know your
login (also referred to as your "userid"), your account
password, and the IP address assigned to your account.
How do I connect to my account via FTP?
There are many differences between FTP client applications
but there are several things which all will need in order to
connect to your account: Your domain name (or IP address if
your domain name change has not propigated), your user Id or
login and your password.
What are all of the files and directories
I see when I log in?
Upon logging into your account, you are restricted to only
your account and cannot move outside of your account. When
you log in, you are in what is known as the "root" of your
account. In here there are several miscellaneous files and
directories, all of which are important but none of which
should be altered or renamed. In short, do not bother these
files. The only files and directories that you should care
about are the "public_html" directory, the "ftp" directory,
and the "logs" directory. If you work with Telnet much, you
might also be interested in the ".profile" and ".cshrc"
files as well. Windows accounts will also have a "data"
directory.
The ";public_html" directory is where all of your files
pertaining to your website should reside. Uploading files
into the "root" of your account will mean that no one will
be able to access them via the web.
The "ftp" directory is where all of your files pertaining to
Anonymous FTP are located. Any files in your ftp directory
will be available via Anonymous FTP if enabled.
The "logs" directory is where all of your logs are kept.
Logs are generated by two services: FTP and the webserver
(HTTP). The log specific to FTP is your xferlog, which has a
record of every file up upload or download and every
file/directory downloaded via Anonymous FTP.
On Windows accounts there is also a "data" directory where
you should place any database files you upload.
Is my FTP activity logged?
Yes, all FTP activity is monitored and recorded in the
xferlog file located in your logs directory.
