What software do I need to use FrontPage
2000 for my website?
In order to author your website with FrontPage, you will
need to install Microsoft FrontPage 97, FrontPage 98,
FrontPage 2000, or FrontPage Express on your computer.
FrontPage Express comes bundled with Microsoft Internet
Explorer so if you have this browser installed, you most
likely have FrontPage Express read to run. While any of
these programs will work, to use all of the features
available, you need to use FrontPage 98 for your client
software.
You will also need to enable FrontPage extensions for your
account. You can do this from your PCP.
Can I use FrontPage 98?
Certainly, though you will be missing out on the any new or
enhancements to existing features released in FrontPage 98.
While the server extensions we install on your account are
meant for FrontPage 2000, they are also compatible with
FrontPage 98 or any other previous version of FrontPage.
Can I use FrontPage Express?
Yes, though you will not be able to use many of the features
available in the FrontPage 2000 program. FrontPage Express
comes bundled with Internet Explorer 5.x. Please keep in
mind that this is a very scaled down version of FrontPage
2000, and you will miss out on many of the outstanding
features of FrontPage 2000.
Is there a free version of FrontPage I can
use?
Yes, FrontPage Express. Microsoft FrontPage Express is a
WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) HTML editor based on
the editing tools in Microsoft's full-featured FrontPage 98
web authoring and management tool. Thought you will be
missing out on all of the features new with FrontPage 2000,
you can use FrontPage Express without any royalties.
What Operating Systems does FrontPage
support?
Microsoft has developed versions of its popular FrontPage
web authoring program for the Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME
environments, as well as the Mac OS.
How can I purchase FrontPage?
There are several places on-line where you can purchase a
single user license of FrontPage for the Windows or Mac OS.
You can also purchase FrontPage from your local software
vendor.
FrontPage 2000 Overview
Microsoft's FrontPage 2000 has quickly become one of the
most popular website programming tools available. More than
just an HTML editor, FrontPage allows you to create dynamic
features on your website, including search engines,
sub-webs, counters, and more with the click of a few
buttons. While use of FrontPage on your account is a
complimentary feature of our service, Microsoft FrontPage
(97, 98, 2000) does require a fee for use. This software
program must be purchased in order to take advantage of the
benefit of FrontPage 98 hosting. As an alternative, you can
use Microsoft's FrontPage Express, which is a free product
without all of the bells and whistles available in FrontPage
97 or 98.
Throughout the content of the FrontPage support area, we
will use the term "FrontPage" to referrer to all versions
(FrontPage 97, FrontPage 98, FrontPage 2000, FrontPage
Express, and FrontPage 1.0). However, when we specify the
version "FrontPage 98", if we are talking specifically about
this version only. While Nader Solutions has tested all of
the above versions of Microsoft FrontPage against our server
extensions, we currently only support configuration help
with Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
Installation of the FrontPage server extensions are optional
when the account is signed up and can be added anytime
thereafter from your Personal Control Panel. It is important
to understand that installation of the FrontPage server
extensions will not hinder your ability to do anything on
your account at all. If you do not use the FrontPage server
extensions, that is ok! It does not hurt for the extensions
to be left in your account unused.
How do I install FrontPage 2000 Server
Extensions on my account?
When you sign up an account with us, you are given the
option to have your account configured with FrontPage 2000
server extensions if the plan you choose supports FrontPage
(see table below). However, if you do not choose for this to
be done, you can setup the extensions at anytime through
your Personal Control Panel. From the PCP, select the
"Development Tools" link then select FrontPage. The right
side of the window will display the current status of
FrontPage Extensions. Click on "Install" from the menu. On
the new page you will need to check the Install box then
click on the button "Install FrontPage 2000 Server
Extensions.
Once you have completed this process, the FrontPage 2000
server extensions will be completely setup on your account.
Is there an additional fee to use
FrontPage 2000 on my account?
Absolutely not. Your costs are the same regardless of
whether you choose to use FrontPage 2000 on your account.
Does Nader Solutions limit use of
FrontPage?
No. All of FrontPage functions, including sub-webs,
discussion boards, search bots, forms, counters, all work
with our service.
Does Nader Solutions Support FrontPage 98
or Older Versions?
Yes, even though you can install only FrontPage 2000
extensions on your account, these extensions will work with
FrontPage 98 or any previous versions of FrontPage.
Does Nader Solutions recommend FrontPage?
It depends on the several factors. If the webmaster of the
site is fairly new at HTML and web development, then
FrontPage is a great solution. Many use FrontPage because it
can create dynamic features on the website without any
programming knowledge. The fact that FrontPage is what they
call a "What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get" HTML editor makes it
very simple to use. However, this WYSIWYG target also has
setbacks. Those who are intermediate to advanced web
developers should consider hard coding or another
application which allows for more control of your web
development. In short, if your are relatively new to web
development, FrontPage is a great solution.
Why does FrontPage just hang when
establishing a connection?
There a number of reasons why FrontPage hangs, the biggest
reason is related to the amount of data in your public_html
directory, both in size and number of files and directories.
The more files/directories and size of data, the longer it
will take FrontPage to log in. Large amounts of data (>
50MB) and/or a large number of files or directories ( > 500)
can cause FrontPage to severely hang and perhaps even
timeout. If there are connectivity problems between your ISP
and Nader Solutions, then this can also lead to FrontPage
hanging badly or even timing out.
Why does FrontPage time-out?
FrontPage can time-out for a number of reasons. Below is a
list of the causes of FrontPage time-outs:1. Large amount of
data in your Root Web (> 50MB)
2. Large number of files/directories in your Root Web (>
500)
3. Data in your public_html which FrontPage cannot interpret
and therefore hangs indefinitely
4. Connectivity problems between your ISP/LAN and Nader
Solution's network.
Troubleshooting this problem should start with investigating
any possible connection problems. Perform a trace route both
going out of our network to your host and from your host
coming into our network will identify any possible
connectivity problems.
A more common cause is the content within the public_html
directory. To test this possible problem, create an empty
sub-web, which has its own Document Root. If it loads
without any problem, you know that the problem is the amount
of content in your public_html directory.
It is connectivity issues and content which can create
time-out errors. Content can be altered, or the best
solution is to simply do your FrontPage updates at night,
when Internet traffic is much lower than during the day.
Another feasible solution is to open the web remotely (via
FP Explorer) and Import the pages from the FP Explorer (File
Import ...). Try to import one page at first to see if you
can get it through cleanly. If that works, you can try
importing several at a time until your site is copied.
Additionally, you can break your website into "subwebs" and
publish these separately. Breaking down your site into more
manageable groupings will also help FrontPage avoid timing
out.
Finally, as another workaround to this problem, when you
have published successfully, you can shorten the amount of
time it takes to publish by checking the "Publish changed
pages only" check box. This will serve a major benefit as
you continue to publish more and more content to your
website.
What is the server time-out length set
to?
All of our web servers are set to a time-out rate of 900
seconds, or 15 minutes. According to Microsoft, this time
period is more than sufficient to allow heavy operations of
FrontPage extensions to complete.
Why do I get an Internal Server Error
when publishing with FrontPage?
There are a number of reasons this can happen, and we
recommend you first remove the FrontPage server extensions
from your account (through your PCP) and then re-install
them. Once you have done this, attempt to publish to your
website once again. If this fails, contact technical support
via a support ticket.
Why won't my FrontPage Counter work?
This is an acknowledged bug with FrontPage 2000 and Apache
1.3. While the FrontPage counter will not work on your main
website, you can use a FrontPage counter on any of your
sub-webs.
Avoiding Problems with FrontPage Hosting
FrontPage is a very particular program which requires a
great amount of restrictions to be met. To avoid problems
with FrontPage Hosting, please attempt to keep your webs
below 75 files. The more files each web has the more likely
your connection will time out while publishing. We also
suggest you utilize multiple sub-webs for large sites.
