A valid application with accurate details must be submitted
and approved before the domain name is considered to be
fully licensed.
The application will be assessed to determine both that the
information provided is valid and that it meets the
allocation criteria.
What com domain name am I
eligible for?
In order to apply for a ..com domain name, 1 of the
following 4 Allocation Criteria will need to be met :
Criteria 1. An Exact Match
The ..com application can be an exact match with one or more
words in the registrant's organization name or trademark, in
the same order as they appear in the name.
Note: Commercial identifiers such as "Pty Ltd" or "Co",
other identifiers such as "com", words such as "a", "the" &
"and" do not need to be included. There is also no
distinction made between singular and plural.
Example : The Wheel Co Ltd could have wheel. COM, or wheels.

Criteria 2. An Abbreviation
The ..com application can be an abbreviation of the
registrant’s organization name or trademark. An
"abbreviation" is where the requested domain name is a
shortened version of the name of the applicant.
The abbreviation must be a close approximation of and have a
related meaning to the complete organization name and can
contain letters or numbers that do not appear in the name
but not additional words.
Examples : The Bayside Computer Company could have comp.
COM, Turner and Turner could have turners. COM or tandt.com

Criteria 3. An Acronym
The com application is an acronym of the registrant’s
organization full name or trademark.
Example : Great Deal Computers Pty Ltd could have gdc.com

Criteria 4. The New ‘Close and Substantial
Connection’ Rule
Under the new policy, a .com domain name can be
registered if there is a ‘close and substantial connection’
to the applicant’s business in 1 of the following 6 areas :
- Product
The .com application refers to a product or service that
the registrant manufactures or sells.
Example : ABC Groceries could have groceries. COM
- Service
The .com application refers to the name of a service
that the registrant provides.
Example : City Party Foods could have catering. COM.
- Event
The .com application refers to an event that the
registrant organizes or sponsors.
Example : If the Great Promotion Company organizes
fashion shows, they could have fashionshow.com.
- Activity
The .com application refers to the name of an activity
for which the registrant provides teaching or training
services.
Example : The ABC Hotel Training Company could have
hospitality. COM
- Venue
The .com application refers to the name of a venue that
is operated by the registrant.
Example : ABC Hotels could have latenightdisco.com,
if ‘Late Night Disco’ is the name of their venue.
- Profession
The .com application is the name of a profession that is
practiced by the registrant.
Example : Dr George Jones could have doctor. COM or
doctorjones.com
What types of characters
can be used in com domain names?
com domain names can have up to 63 characters. This means
that the domain name you choose
can-have-up-to-63-characters.com - You will sometimes find
references to 67 character domain names, this includes the
dot and the letters c-o-m as an additional 4 characters.
One of the advantages of longer domain names is that you
can register phrases such as what-is-the-matrix-the-movie.

Who can register com domain
names?
To be eligible for a domain name in the com 2LD, registrants
must be:
a) an registered company; or
b) trading under a registered business name in any State or
Territory; or
c) an partnership or sole trader;
d) a foreign company licensed to trade in ; or
e) an owner of an Registered Trade Mark; or
f) an applicant for an Registered Trade Mark 1 ; or
g) an association incorporated in any State or Territory; or
h) an commercial statutory body.
Can I reserve a com domain
name?
No. com domain names are licensed to applicants on a
"first-come, first- served" basis. There is no provision for
queuing of applications. If a domain name is already
licensed, or if an application is pending for that name, no
further applications will be accepted for that name until
the name is either revoked or the pending application is
declined.
How many com domain names
can I register?
Multiple ..com domain names can be registered to the one
organization name.
Are there any com domain
names that are not allowed to be registered?
Restrictions still remain on place names as does not allow
registration of any place name that has a Postcode (as
defined by Post).
If I am not eligible for a
com domain name what choices do I have?
There may be another domain space (for example net,, org)
that is more appropriate for your organization.
Otherwise, for hassle free domain registration, select a
domain space that is not restricted by allocation policies.
For example, you can register a domain name ending in .com,
..net or ..org. Unlike com, .com, .net and .org domains do
not have eligibility criteria, nor are there any
restrictions on the type of name you can register.

Do I need to have my
domain name hosted straight away?
No. If you do not yet know where you are going to host your
domain name you can first secure it and then simply
re-delegate it at a later stage (there is no fee for
re-delegation).
